In any environment, since changes are inevitable, there is a continuous requirement of progress and development. Any physical or mental problem always compels humans to get a plausible solution. The ‘solution’ cannot be fulfilled until we understand the problem clearly, and that clarity comes through scientific investigation. Currently, the whole globe is facing one of the few catastrophic health situations that occurs hardly once in a century. The pandemic of Covid-19, which is being generated by a virus called SARS –CoV-2, has all ability to change every walk of life, beginning with our individual, social or technological behaviour. It is posing a great threat/problem before humanity to survive in an utter sensitive situation, where a single mistake can be lethal to our existence.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic seems to have severe impacts across the globe, especially on human health and economic activities. IMF has predicted that global GDP will contract by 4.9% in 2020, far greater than during the 2008–2009 Global Financial Crisis, while the European Commission expects an even larger reduction of 8% for the Euro Area. Thus, Covid-19 presents potentially devastating global problems with a need for rapid remediating government intervention. Though governments are intensifying their efforts to combat the global spread of COVID-19 by enacting various measures to support public health systems and safeguard the economy, however, more decisive and innovative intervention is required which can address the societal concern. Epidemiological challenges create much stronger incentives for localized mitigation and immunization and unfold over shorter timescales.
Thus, countries need to innovate new approaches in a post-COVID era and focus on reorienting their development models at the local level, particularly in terms of the application of science and technology, environmental protection and economic recovery. There is also need of a better institutional and societal mechanism, which can be integrated with development mechanism, for effective implementation of mitigation measures.
COVID-19 would be a prominent agent to change the way we worked and entertained us before, e.g., work would be on/through screen in offices unlike it was in pre-COVID era, no more entertainment for viewing movies in cinema halls as before, no more visiting picnic spots and natural scenic places, etc. In nutshell, COVID-19 would provide a base and evolution for 21stcentury to be more digital and virtual. There will be an emergence of abundant new and innovative usage of herbals to fight against ailments and experience wellness.
The present webinar is organized to identify and analyse the main impacts of COVID-19 on the global development process and as to how we can mitigate the adverse impacts of COVID-19 by developing and implementing new development model(s, which may cater the need of post-COVID scenario.
